The search engine!!!!!!!!!!!

Guys…Quick………., Find me the meaning of “ABRACADABRA”………..Get me that soon.. Within 15 seconds…

START ACTIONNNNNNNNNNNNNN ……………………………………………….. ……………………………………………………………………………..……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

I know what most of you guys did…..

Anything you want at anytime, you go there. Everyone who hurry up for the information, who wants to gather the information can’t avoid from entering into this website…Around 200 million times this website has been used daily…It is so user friendly with a trouble free design unlike the richest man’s software...

You can see the word ‘search’ in this world is slowly replaced by Googling. Yes…I am going to write about Google- The story of Google. Whatever I read from the book “The Google story”.

The Google guys who invented this software are Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Both wonderful minds and their brilliant ideas originated from Stanford University. Yes both of them were Ph.D. students working with young Indian professor (Age: 30) Rajeev Motwani (IIT- Kanpur).

Sergey Brin is so brilliant that he had his Undergraduate Degree at the age of 19 (Ooopssss!!!!). Even at that age, he finished lots of advanced graduate courses (Big Oooopsss!!!). He had his Masters degree from Stanford at the age of 21.

Larry Page too had his Masters from Stanford and was enrolled in the Ph.D. programme. A great friends, they once found that the quality of search offered by the then leading search engine Altavista was so bad that it was not able to find its own name. They determined to give the world a quality search. Then they started inventing a better search engine .Their idea started with their own patented “Page Rank” algorithm. These energetic lads programmed the search engine within a year (‘96-‘97). After lot of brainstorming, the trio named the engine as Google (Actually named wrong…a misnomer Googol meaning 1 followed by 100 zeroes). They tried to sell the new technology to Yahoo and Altavista for only 1million dollar. But both the companies rejected saying they are not concentrating on a faster search and for them search will not bring any revenues.

At the start, Google had only 10,000 hits. They also quit their Ph.D. programme to start developing Google(at age: 26). Quality is the thing. People love quality. If the product has highest quality, not even a single penny has to be spent on marketing. The highest quality and reliable search engine’s popularity spreaded(s) completely through the ‘word of mouth’ marketing principle. In the next year, 1 million searches were hitting it. Then in another one year, 15 million searches. Now approximately 200 million hits. One of the top 5 things why you want to work in Google is their free- good quality- high healthy food (free Breakfast and free innovative Lunch). The environment simulated there is similar to that of Grad studies (enjoyyyy).

Google earn its billions only through Ad’s. Google earns money only by selling “Targetted Text Ads” (related to search and mail). With a motto of “Don’t be evil”, it sells Ads without being evil to you. You can find in their website that “Little is more” philosophy. About one-third of the page is allotted for Ads and is clearly demarcated from the other two third of the search results. Both the advertisers and users are customers to Google.

Now Google is a giant and we are standing on the shoulders of the giant (Google Scholar). I am feeling lucky to have Google.

Long live Google and its quality service.

Supermannnn (It's mee)

Superman....!!!!!!!!

It's meee...Believe it...This is meee....I am evolved as a superman here in Canada…. Yes this is how in my workplace I am getting popular. Pls don't make any mistakes by assuming that I did saved the world from danger or some human species or species of any other kind.

Its not me..but my name did the magic for me....My name has been mutated into Superman... But how to Superman ????

Here's the short story...

I give people a tough time in spelling out my full name...Yes the guys from foriegn origin always have a sweet experience in pronouncing the names. one of the guys called "Balasubramanian Ganapathy Subramani" (humbly it's me) as "Supra many" (!!???!!!) ..........Then slowly evolved the 'super-mani'... Then "Super Man"....

I am now a Superman......

This is how evolution occured for some of the other species...

1.Ambalavanan to 'Am-Pal-van-an' and then "Amps"... (If you touch him you will get electrocuted...Thotta Shock adikkum)
2. Shenbogue (what kind of name is this..Which Language??) to 'Chan-po-gue' and then "Chan"....
3. Arumugam to 'Air-u-mugam' and then "Air".
4. Krishna govinda ramudu to "Kris" ("Chris")...
5. Chattopadhyaya to "Chat"...
6. Kannayiram to 'Gunn-Hai-Ram' and then "Gun"..
7. Gopala Krishnan to 'Go-pal' and then "Go"....
8. Hari Krishna to 'Harry Krishna'..Then "Harry"....
9. Chindamani to 'Chind-A-Many' and then 'Cind' and finally “Cindy"...
10. Dayanand to 'Day-Anand' and then "Day".
11. Senthamizh Selvan to "Sen"..... May be someday "Sin"??????

Thus the Indian names are slowly evolving to English names heree…..Any questions please…???? Think over how your name can evolve...

Swadesh.....

Two years.. 730 days...Went fast..I am excited these days...I booked the ticket for visiting India after 2 years.

"Yeh jo desh hi tera...
Swadesh hai tera
Tujhe yeh pukaaraa..."

This is a song from a Bollywood movie called Swadesh... which means "This is your country and It is calling you..."

These days I started giving trouble to my room mates and friends by trying to sing this high pitch song (in typical Rahman's tone) whenever possible.

"Diversity means India"

It has been two years since I left India. I was not knowing the values of India before coming here to Canada. In India, we have 35 different countries. Every 200 or 300 km you travel, you will find an another new country with different cultures, different food varieties, different language but with a same egoistic feeling "Indian".

India with its hot climate has desert, rain forests, mountains, hill stations, plataeu regions, rivers and beaches. You go to the museums and you will be surprised with the real history dating back to early 1000's. It is not like any new country with their museums dating back to 1900's antiques. Regarding arts, We have atleast 20 different dances ranging from fastest to slowest. We have 23 official languages. Regarding the number of dialects, its huge....1652. Regarding dishes, Its amazing...If you are connoissuer of food, please have a visit to India. Thats why India is "land of countries".

India is the mother and origin of four different religions. Nine different religions are practised in India. India is the largest secularistic country. No one questions you of your religious beliefs.

Adaptability

Everyother Indian is multilinguistic. These different varieties of experiences gives an Indian a edge of getting easier adaptability. Each and every Indian will express their own opinion about any other topic eventhough they don't know ABCD of that topic. Yes, the largest democracy has given enough freedom to express our views. The largest democracy also enables the "survival of the fittest" gene within us. We are strong competitors, by hook or crook, we get it done.

Also, I am also wondering whether I would have written only 10% of the real diversity!!??!!

After reading all these good things about India...You can ask me why you are just visiting India then !!!!!!!!!!!!!!...Silence please................

Veggie or Non-Veggie

Personally , I don't want to write controversial topics.....But the writer in me is asking to write a one...Here it is.....

Let me ask these questions and try analysing this topic . My friend Sarvesh Upadhyaya, Mechanical Engineering, McMaster University helped me a lot in gathering points..Most of the points are from our debate!!!!!!!!!

(1) What is a vegetarian ???? (Let's fix the STANDARD definition first..)

(2) Is there any difference between vegetarian and non-vegetarian ???

(3) Man (Homosaphiens) by evolution (nature's creation) is veggie or non-veggie ???

(4) Is it meaningful to be a vegetarian ???

Definition: Only Herbivorous (i.e: plant eating including fruits) are all vegetarians. We don't want to go into debates such as egg i and milk s vegg ie or non-veg. Lets "assume" these controversial egg and milk items are non-veg.

Is there any difference between eating plants and animals ?? ..................................................

Scientifically, plants and animals are all living beings. They have the same system except animals have well developed nervous system. Plants infact have a better system to adaptability. They funtion similar to animals (except locomotion) . There is no biological and functional difference between a plant or even a single celled amoeba (or even bacteria). They do most of the activities similar to animals. No clear demarcation line can be drawn indicating the basic functional differences. If animals have spirit or soul, then plants do have same spirit as their functionalities are similar. But the main difference exists in the form of chemical composition . For ex: Plants have more cellulose and animals have more proteins.

Is eating meat a sin??................................................................

I don't think eating meat is sin because the nature who created us has created lion and tiger who devours herbivourous animals. If concept of sin is applied to us, then it is applied to all the carnivorous animals including lion and tiger.

Man (Homosaphiens) by evolution (nature's creation) is veggie or non-veggie ??.........................

Man by evolution is vegetarian. simple argument is Homosaphiens when evolved don't have stronger teeth, bigger mouth and stronger nails (incomparison to carnivorous). These three things are essential for the meat eaters. Say for example, all the carnivorous uses these three basic systems to devour on another animals. Nails are used to tear the flesh, kill the prey. Bigger mouth and stronger teeth is used to bite at the neck of the prey. Ours are comparitively much weeker even though we are advanced creatures of the nature, which means we are not created as a non-veggie.

Is it meaningful to be a vegetarian ??............................................

By the second argument, yes it is not meaningful to be a vegetarian as eating plants and animals are all one and the same (all living being with most of the similar functionalities). But being the matured race of the evolution, I feel it is important to save the other species. Also, by evolution (when created) Homosaphiens are only vegetarians. If we believe nature as the god (so evolution a god's process), then our default state is vegetarian.

Finally to conclude, If you are satisfied with your current state as veggie or non-veggie, better stick with it...because it gives you satisfaction.

I welcome all of your comments on this controversial topic. I believe each others belief is respectable.

Note: I am still a type of veggie ( sometimes egg, most of the times milk products) .

The tenth day.....

This is a sad story about one of my best friends.........

One of my childhood friend is a nice, handsome, intellectual and enlightened guy. He can influence lot of people with his charisma. He attracts people with his funny and humorous character. I am personally a fan of him. This friend visited me in an official tour, when I was working after my graduation. He wanted to stay there for some couple of days (may be a month or so). This is the sad story happened during these days...

I introduced him to my friends circle. Even in the first few hours of his visit, he got popular. Within a day or two, he got around 20 friends. Unfortunately at the third day, I got an urgent call from my native place and I had to leave to my hometown. I gave him my house key and I asked him to reside in my home.

In the meantime, He was getting more popular. People started visiting him daily especially in the evenings when all their work has been finished. He was celebrated like a Bollywood hero. Everyone started praising him , prepared and brought variety of dishes. There he was forced to eat their dishes. Each day people were competing to attract him. He was very happy. This continued until the tenth day.

Then the sad incident happened. In the tenth day evening, as usual lot of people visited him. They celebrated him and four strong guys came forward from the crowd, they lifted him and carried him to the nearby river. The crowd followed him. My friend thought that there is a special party arranged for him near by the river bank. But he was not aware of the real situation. They took him inside the river, Immersed him there, left him there, informed him that "This is the place you have to reside, this ceremony is for leaving you here only" and then they returned back.

He was surprised. He was surprised that "Why people showed lot of love to me, celebrated me???..I never asked for celebration or love, Why after ten days, they throw me out???". He was confused. He was sobering "Why people have done this to me. What mistake I did? Is this ups and downs are a part of my life?".

Note:- The guy whom I am talking is Lord Ganesh. On the occasion of Ganesh Chathurthi (Birthday of Ganesh), He (typically statue made of sand) will be celebrated for 10 days and on the tenth day, that Ganesh statue will be immersed and dissolved into the river or sea (called Visarjan). Visarjan is done to point out that creation & destruction, birth & death are a part of ones life.

Drinking Beer

Note: I am not a competitive drinker...Until now just three times..in period of two yrs in Canada. These are the view points of an Amateur drinker...
"I am a good guy.. I wont take beer.... I will remain a good guy...."

" People who take beer are frustrated guys.. They try to enjoy their life in a pseudo world...".

This is what i was thinking when I was doing my undergraduate. My friends called me a "fruit" because i was not drinking even beer. I continued to live the same after I my undergraduate degree.

Seasons changed. Monsoons returned. I entered Canada. I saw people roaming with glasses of wine and bottles of beer in their shirt and pant pockets. "Really all these people are frustrated ? Really they don't know how to enjoy their real life ???" I asked myself.

Once in my friends home, I wanted to try the experiment. " How a beer will taste like ??". I remembered one of my friends words "Beer will taste like a bitter yogurt". Being from South India, I like yogurt very much. and I wanted to try that new type of yogurt which comes in beer bottle.

Then, I started having a sip of beer. I was not liking it. I started asking my friends " How people love it ? Why they want to drink it ? They love the taste or the 'relaxed behavior' or drinking is hyped as form of socializing ?". They replied "Don't ask , just do it". They said again "Drink three to four times, three to four cups. You will come to know". I thought I will be feeling guilty of having the sip of beer. But I was not. Meanwhile, one of my friends also gave me a biological opinion about beer. "Beer is good for health. It cleans your digestive system. It kills bacteria."

In the meantime, I met some of the Germans who drink about 4 liters of beer per day and do a good job. For some people, beer is like water. They don't drink water. After some analysis and my good experiments, I finally concluded "people drink beer mainly for socializing. It gives them a relaxed feeling". It is hyped much in Indian cinema that drinking is bad. Yes drinking is bad..too much of drinking is bad. Drinking without control is bad.

To end, "Drinking beer is not always bad for health. But drinking more up to the point of losing consciousness is bad. It makes you look crazy. It affects your liver. ".
Now here is my new thought process.............

" I am not a frustated guy... I am a real happy guy.... I am not taking more beer"

" I am a good guy... I take only limited beer.. I will remain a good guy by taking limited beer..."

The defender

"I was sweating in the AC room...."

It was really tough time. They drilled, roasted, fried, barbiqued me. After I came to Canada (nearly 2 years), this is the first time my friends found me sweating. Lot of questions about everything, almost anything from whatever i worked on my thesis. It was 90 minutes continuous shoot up. It was an open defence. Some of my friends here in my University were more scared than me. They said "It was like watching horror film".

Finally when the committee head said me, "Bala, you have passed your Master's ......". I was not even had energy to celebrate it. But I know I was really happy to hear it out.

I understood at the end of my defence "what a friend in need means", why is it necessary to have good friends?. I was proud of myself; not in my technical ability, but in my ability to make good friends. I feel afterall the technical stuffs will never go beyond some extent.

I also feel that as far as anything ends in a constructive manner, destructive things can happen. I know that these "nice" things happens once in my life time. If I pass sooooo smooth, then there is no fun in it. I know I was scared enough. But I enjoyed the thrill of the ride. And it ended up with a big celebration.

Finally, I thank all of my friends who travelled with me in this ride.

Success story - "Out of box thinking"

Here we are going to read a story "Tale of two guys". My grandma was a great management guru. She was not CEO or MD of any industry. But she knows how to tell stories for motivating others and kindle their out of box thinking capability.

One such story..Here it is..

Note:Pls forgive the logical flaws.

There was a small nuclear family comprising two children and their parents. The two kids are both small boys. The elder kid is a funny boy, litlte lazy, but more smart with little big tummy. The younger kid is a hardworker, very serious (gets angry very fast), honest with a well built body.

One fine day their father and mother called for a competition between the kids. Parents will be the judge. Whoever will win the competition, he will get a prize money of 1billion dollar (It's Huge!!!). Yep., both of the guys get excited and enter into competition. Generally these kids love both other so much that they generally don't enter into competition with each other. But the prize money made them to enter into such competition( ofcourse everyone needs big money).

The competition is whoever comes round the world first (or fastest), they will get the prize money. Both were given a Honda 20,000 CC bike with full fuel tank and twenty thousand dollars to spend on the way (for their gas on the trip, food, accomodation and some fun). The elder brother know that he cannot compete and win his younger bro, who is a well built- hard worker. He being lazy has to opt for really smart idea.

By the time he was thinking of the idea, the younger one got into the action. Whizzzz..sound comes..yes he departed..he was into race immediately. Now the elder one was thinking how to make his parents happy and earn the big money. He was a typical manager who knows how to get the work done in a smart way. He dont want to spend energy, waste fuel. He also wanted to cut the cost.

So he was thinking in several ways, different angles. He got it..He got the idea..Yes. He got the real idea. He went to his parents. They were standing together. He went around them in a circle. He said them "Both father and mother together forms his world". By going around them, he achieved his target of coming around the world. His parents got so much excited. He said they are his world. They were really happy to have a kid who thinks that they are the world. They immediately announced that he is the winner (Unfair????).

He got the big sum of 1 billion dollar..Smart guy!!!!!!!!

Note again: I think now you guys really would have understood who this brilliant guy is and who the other hardworker is....!!!!!!!!
For those who dont know..it is the story of Lord Muruga and Lord Ganesha in Tamilnadu, India.

Newton's first law for a successful life

In this discussion let’s see how the Newton's first law helps us to get success in our career and in our life. We will see a fact that evolution of organisms and humans occurred through Newton's law!!!!!

Newton first law (Law of inerita):-

“An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an external and unbalanced force. An object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an external and unbalanced force”. [Source: Wikipedia]

Essentially, it makes the following two points:
1. An object that is not moving will not move until a net force acts upon it.
2. An object that is in motion will not change its velocity (accelerate) until a net force acts upon it.

In simple terms the law states that object will be at rest when no external force acts on it. Thus term Inertia comes into account. In simple terms, inertia is resistance to change. Let us think how this law applies to us and our success in life. In our real life, objects are humans. We will be at state of rest if no external force acts on us.

Thus a person tends to remain in state of rest unless some external force like supervisor or his previous bad experiences acts on him. Inertial force within us makes us to stay in a constant state without any improvement. Inertial force has to be overcome in order for the state to be changed. So if we want to get success in your career and in life, we shoould be prepared for the change.

The evolution of life occured (and occuring) because there is a constant need to change (eg:Natural forces). Homosaphiens (Humans) comes into existence because of our genetic material's decision to change for the betterment (Survival instinct) . Otherwise there will be only single celled amoeba and fishes roaming in the world. Though these changes occurred over the past million of years (because of slow learning of DNA), change concept is already embedded into us through our genes. We exist because of "CHANGE". Thus embracing change is one way of achieving success.

The Altitude parameter

"The optimist sees opportunity in every danger; the pessimist sees danger in every opportunity." - Winston Churchill

"Two men look out the same prison bars; one sees mud and the other stars." - Frederick Langbridge

"When you believe you can-you can!" - Maxwell Maltz

"To different minds, the same world is a hell, and a heaven." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Everyone has his burden. What counts is how you carry it." – Merle Miller

1.What these quotes talks about??

2.Whether they talk about being optimistic, power of belief, being motivated, accepting Change??

3.What is the single word that represents all the above combined together ???

4.What is the most important thing in life that determines our apex of success????

The answer to all these queries is the single and most important parameter called as Attitude. Attitude is a hypothetical construct that represents an individual's like or dislike for an item (wikipedia).
We can compare the mass of iceberg to the cause of success. Phenomena related to success including hardwork, optimistic, flexibility to change is like visible tip of the iceberg (10% of the whole iceberg mass). The huge 90% part of the iceberg which remains non- visible is the attitude parameter. Only attitude supports the 10% of the top iceberg mass.

Attitude is all about how you look at a specific activity, how you approach it. If you are enthusiastic about the particular activity, then you will go optimistic, motivated, embrace the change, perseverant, hard working. Success of a person depends only on his attitude. When the person has the right attitude, then he climbs the success ladder. Research has shown that by constant persuasion, people can change their negative attitude to positive attitude.

Lets finish the argument about attitude parameter with the quotes of great people.

"Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character" - Albert Einstein.

"It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome." - William James.

Finally to end with, Attitude determines your success altitude.

B (+) ve and Accept Change

These lines forms the center of Gita, the philosophical text of hinduism.
"Whatever happened, it happened well.
Whatever is happening, it is happening well.
Whatever will happen, it will also happen well.
What of yours did you lose? Why or for what are you crying?
What did you bring with you, for you to lose it?
What did you create, for it to be wasted or destroyed?
Whatever you took, it was taken from here.
Whatever you gave, it was given from here.
Whatever is yours today, will belong to someone else tomorrow.
On another day, it will belong to yet another.
This change is the law of the universe"

-'Philosopher' Krishna

I am sometimes skeptical about 'Lord' Krishna's existence. But i am sure that he should be a great philosopher (Philosopher Krishna) who mentioned the greatest philosophy in ones life i.e: Materialistic Change (Change in this recent world relates to many management practises). The core of the gita also mentions that you to be positive and self-motivated person with least expectation. The last one (least expectation) is the remedy for most of our sorrows.

Lets try disseminating the information. The first four lines asks us to be motivated and positive. The second four talks about materialistic properties of life. The next two liners are about the concept of materialistic change we encounter in this life and practise of least expectation to avoid the embarrasments. The last line asks us to be ready for any situation and state transitions. Yes. Change is permanent in ones life.

A single liner which will resemble the quotes will be
" Be positive and Accept change"

(Enlightening continues).................
